    Nellie Kenyon: Trailblazing Tennessee Journalist

    by Tyler Boyd

Starting her career at the Chattanooga News, Kenyon broke down barriers for women in the journalism field. She was the only woman covering the Scopes Trial, where she received Press Pass No. 1. She also helped solve a bank robbery and interviewed Al Capone on his way to prison. Later working for the Nashville Tennessean, she reported on the Georgia Tann adoption scandal in Memphis, a hidden tape recorder under the governor's desk, and both of Jimmy Hoffa's trials here in Tennessee. Her objectivity, work ethic, and professionalism make her a standout role model for anyone today.

    Unsung Heroes of D-Day

    by Mike Ellicott

On D-Day June 6, 1944, 156,000 soldiers from eight nations landed by air and sea along a 55-mile-wide swath of the Normandy Coast in Northwest France to begin the Liberation of Nazi Occupied Europe.  It was the beginning of the end of WWII on the European Continent.  Eleven months later, Nazi Germany ceased to exist.  Many of the participants - Eisenhower, Montgomery, Bradley - are household names.  This presentation will tell the story of less well known, but equally important, individuals including British General Frederick Morgan who conceived the original D-Day Plan, American LtCol Joel Couch, who trained the Army Air Force Pilots that dropped American Paratroops early on D-Day, and two Canadian Brothers, Majors Elliot and Charles Dalton, who led the assault on Juno Beach.  Learn their stories and the stories of many other Unsung Heros of D-Day.

Mike Ellicott retired as a Colonel after a 26-year career in the Army Corps of Engineers and he retired again 16 years later as the Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning and Construction for the Texas Tech University System.  He now focuses on his love of WWII and Civil War history and leads, with his wife Marilyn, tours of the Normandy and Gettysburg Battlefields.  Marilyn and Mike live in Collierville, he is the Past President of the Friends of the Morton Museum in Collierville.

The United States Colored Troops March to Freedom by Michael Cherry

The advent of the slaves to soldiers was hesitantly accomplished, but their admittance into the Civil War effectively turned the tide. Many heroic battles ensued after the Emancipation Proclamation was announced. It was in Galveston Bay in Texas on June 19, 1865, that the USCT appeared by providence to share in the pronouncement of Freedom in Texas. War records declare that there were approximately 185,000  United States Colored Troops and approximately 28,000 from Tennessee.

Michael L. Cherry has been an avid researcher of the United States Colored Troops from West Tennessee, specifically from Madison County, TN. He identified these men, found their service records, and spearheaded the drive to have the Tennessee Historical Commission erect a marker. This action was approved and rewarded his research efforts by placing the historical marker at the location of the recruitment center. Mr. Cherry has spoken at the Memphis Public Library for AAHGS Memphis on a collaborated event honoring the USCT and for AAHGS Memphis’s African American History Month.  Additionally, he has spoken on the USCT at the Association for the Study of African American Life and History’s Annual Convention in Memphis, TN.

Community Involvement: Member of the NAACP, West Tennessee Genealogy Society, and Association for the Study of African American Life and History

Education: University of Memphis, BA in African American Studies, 2019

Military Service: United States Army 1968-1970
