Tennessee Genealogical Society
for all of Tennessee since 1954

The Tennessee Genealogical Society was founded in 1952 and chartered by the state in 1954. It is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, completely staffed by volunteers. The society is presently located in the historic area of Old Germantown at 7779 Poplar Pike, Germantown, Tn, near Memphis, with offices and lecture room in the Germantown Regional History and Genealogy Center, which also houses the 14,000 volume library.

Members have unlimited use of REGIONAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY CENTER Library at 7779 Poplar Pike, Germantown, TN, during regular hours, 10:00 AM — 2:00 PM Monday, 10:00 AM—4:00 PM. Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00 AM —5:00 PM. Saturday. (Phone number is 901-757-8480)
THE TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY with offices in the RHGC, is open 10:00 AM—2:00 PM Tuesday & Thursday. (Phone number is 901-754-4300)

    The Tennessee Genealogical Society is pleased to announce that members now have access to Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest
    while working in our Research Center at 7779 Poplar Pike
    Pike.  You may use our computers or bring your
    wireless laptop.   Access is limited to inside the
    facility.   Click here to enter Ancestry.com  or HeritageQuest.

    For TnGen members who would like to access HeritageQuest outside of the Library, Please use this link and your TnGen Library card number.

    Tn Gen has just added a new service for use inside the Library building.  This service is digitizing and archiving old newspapers and making them available on-line.  The project is still young but it is growing.  Let us know if you benefit from this site.  (For users INSIDE the Library only.)

How to Get Started in Genealogy

Exhibit Chronicles the Early Years of Freedom for Former Slaves in Tennessee 

 

 

An exhibit created by the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area is traveling throughout Tennessee. Entitled “Free at Last! Emancipation and Reconstruction in Tennessee,” the 2-panel exhibit emphasizes the significance of emancipation as a result of the Civil War. “Our goal is to tell the whole story of the Civil War and Reconstruction in Tennessee,” says Laura Holder, manager of the Heritage Area. “The GRHGC is a terrific place to tell the emancipation story.”

"Our Trees, Your Trees"  Series
 Using Photoshop Elements to Restore Old Photos.

When: Sunday, February 24, 2008,  3 p.m.

We will use Photoshop Elements to restore old family photos and demonstrate some enhancements you can make with current photos.  Vince Hughes will lead this class.  Free and open to the public.  (This class will be repeated on March 13.)


African-American Genealogy Research Workshop

The Captain Nicholas Martiau Chapter, Huguenot Society
"A Visit from our Ancestors"

Shelby County during the War between the States
Historian, Dr. John Harkins discusses the role Shelby County played during the Civil War and the latest information on his new book Historic Shelby County

Dr. Harkins is president of the West Tennessee Historical Society.  He regularly writes articles for several publications and has published a number of books on the history of West Tennessee.  Free and open to the public.


A History Special
The "MURKIN Files" -  How James Earl Ray was
Caught

When: Sunday, April 20, 2008, 3 pm.

This April marks the 40th anniversary of the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.  Vince Hughes will guide us through his collection of original documents relating to the investigation of this event and describe, step by step, the process that led to the capture of James Earl Ray.  Having been a part of the event in 1968, Vince is prepared to answer your questions on what happened that April evening.  Free and open to the public.


A Children's Special

When: April 26, 2008, from 9am -12 noon

What child has not imagined himself as a soldier in America's War Between the States? Now, he can be right in the middle of it. Bryce A. Chandler will appear in uniform to discuss the life of a drummer boy during the War Between the States. He will play his fife and homemade drum, and will also be available for signing his book, A Courier for Stonewall.  Chandler knows what appeals to the adventurous minds of young readers. Using GPS as an Aid to Recording Your Family History

This workshop will discuss various GPS equipment, mapping terms, and plotting positions relative to your genealogical records.  Vince Hughes will lead the class.  Free and open to the public.
